Frequently
Asked Questions
-
What is a Tooth Gem?A tooth gem is a cosmetic procedure in which a jewel is attached to the enamel of the tooth.
-
How are they applied?Tooth gems are applied using professional dental adhesives, the same way an orthodontic bracket (braces) is attached to the teeth. There is no drilling involved, and the procedure is completely painless and non-invasive. The application takes about 10 minutes or longer depending how many are being applied.
-
How long do they last? Most tooth gems will fall off naturally from six weeks to a year, although they can last years. Be aware, numerous factors affect retention of gems, such as hard foods, acidity of mouth, playing with gem, etc. A good tip is to ensure you do not run your tongue around it or play with it, as this will affect the retention of the gem/charm. Note: All gems/charms have a one month warranty, if the gem falls off within one month of the application, then it can be reapplied at no charge. Please be aware that sometimes the backing may still be attached and will require removal (polished) by a dentist before re-application.
-
Will a tooth gem harm the tooth? No, the crystal/charm is bonded to the teeth the same way an orthodontic bracket is applied. The procedure and removal are the same processes. When removed, it will simply be pop off and polished to remove any remaining bonding material. We only use quality dental grade adhesives which will not effect the tooth.
-
Are your crystals lead-free?Yes, we only use Authentic Swarovski Crystals, diamond and solid 18kt yellow & white gold which are lead-free and non-toxic.
-
Can you remove my gem or adhesive?Unfortunately, the technician cannot remove the gem or adhesive at this time. Please book an appointment with your dentist to remove any product from the tooth.
-
Can I get a tooth gem if I wear a retainer, night guard or clear aligners (Invisalign)?Depending on the type of retainer/night guard, tooth gems may be applied, let the technician know if you wear a retainer during consultation. We do not recommend tooth gems until you've completed your orthodontic treatment. Tooth gems are not recommend for persons with braces, veneers and crowns.
-
Can I get my teeth whitened before or after tooth gems?We recommend whitening first as whitening over your gem can weaken the bond as well as you may have less discolouration when the gem eventually comes off or is removed. Teeth whitening can be done after gem placement as well, but as mentioned it may weaken the bond and affect retention of the tooth gem.
-
Can I brush my teeth as normal? Do I still need to have them cleaned by the dentist?Yes, routine oral hygiene is highly recommended. Continue to brush and floss daily because a tooth gem does offer an extra place for plaque. Ensure you continue with your routine dentist visits. *Please note for the first 24-48 hours after the jewel is applied, it is recommended to not use an electric toothbrush.
-
Is it safe?Extensive research and clinical studies indicate that if teeth and gums are normal and healthy there are no adverse effects to cosmetic whitening of teeth under the supervision of a dental professional. Sparkle Smiles Studio uses Wicked White Professional Whitening system. Wicked White offers top-quality teeth whitening products that have been clinically tested, and are certified safe and effective. Their products are also registered with Health Canada. Teeth whitening will not change or damage the structure of the teeth - it simply makes them whiter and brighter. Wicked White, as with any teeth whitening product, is not recommended for children under 16 years of age and pregnant or lactating women.
-
Are there any side effects?Sensitivity during treatment may occur with some persons. On rare occasions, minor tingling sensations are experienced immediately after the procedure, but they always dissipate. To reduce sensitivity, we recommend using sensitive toothpaste 1-2 weeks before teeth whitening session.
-
How long does it last?By following some simple post-whitening care instructions, your teeth will always be lighter than they were before. To keep your teeth looking their best, we recommend flossing, brushing twice daily, and occasional in-office refresher sessions. Source: Wicked White
